Nigeria’s Rivers State Government has inaugurated a committee without the technical expertise for road maintenance

According to a statement by the Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Simeon Nwakaudu, a Road Maintenance Agency committee has been inaugurated in the state.

These professionals will constitute the Road Maintenance Agency Committee; 

1. Prince Timothy Nsirim – Chairman
2. Mr. Fyneman Olungwe – Secretary
3. Chief Ogbams Ojimah – Member
4. Mr. Sunny Bekwanwa – Member
5. Mr. Destiny Nganibo – Member
6. Mrs. Stella Agada – Member
7. Mr. Achinike Amadi – Member
8. Mr. Boma Tamunoibi Jumbo – Member
9. Engr. Sam Kakoro – Member
10. Madam Patience E. Ibiamu – Member
11. Mr. Chimezie Nwankwo – Member

It is evident that only one engineer made the list, which does not constitute a strong technical competence to execute road maintenance in the state. Engineers are professionals who plan, design, and project manage the execution of infrastructures. Just imagine hiring an accountant to deliver a baby or hiring a lawyer to draw a building plan. An important committee of this calibre should have technocrats, and not political bureaucrats.

Road maintenance is a major challenge facing every developing nation and with this news, more challenges will be recorded as unqualified individuals are holding position meant for professionals. The Governor has done well by recognising the need for such committees but the right professionals should occupy these positions.
